In this post we highlight 5 top tips for WordPress beginners.
Manage Your Menu
On the left sidebar click APPEARANCE and then MENUS and you will see your website navigation.
You can easily drag and drop pages into different places and make them sub-menu items by dropping them below with an indent. This is an easy way of creating drop-down menus on your website.
Set Your Blog Page
It is a great idea to run a blog on your website, as it is a great way of engaging your visitors and you can then promote the posts on Facebook and Twitter.
To set which page your posts will appear click SETTINGS on the left sidebar and then READING and you can then set your home page (the one that is displayed when your domain is entered) and the blog/posts page).
On the left sidebar click MEDIA and you will then see your media library (all the images and documents that you have previously uploaded).
Click ADD NEW at the top of the screen and you can then upload documents to your website, such as Word, Excel, PDF, etc.
You can then add a link to your document so that visitors can download them.
Use Clean Permalinks
WordPress pretty permalinks allow your page url to be www.yourwebsitename.co.uk/the-page-name, which is far cleaner and easier than www.yourwebsitename.co.uk/827482281dsj
Click SETTINGS on the left sidebar and then PERMALINKS. You will then have different options, such as a numeric url or a dated url, however we always use POST NAME for permalink structure on our websites as it makes it much easier to navigate around the website.
Schedule Blog Posts for the Future
It is easy to schedule blog posts to be released on the website at a particular time – e.g. if you are writing a few blog posts at the same time, then you may want to publish one today, one in 3 days and one next week.
At the bottom of the PUBLISH box at the top right of the post edit screen, it will say PUBLISH IMMEDIATELY. Click EDIT next to that and you can set when your post will be released to the public. Click OK, and then SCHEDULE to save the settings.
